It's a sunny day, just came from the http://www.rai.nl/ where is the
http://www.tine.nl/ ie. The Internetworking Event. Ending up in there
could be added as another case of Internet-enabled World Surf:
On IRC there is the legendary #42 - the first and so oldest channel alive
- where the Finnish hard working former net enthusiasts who have turned to
be current corporate strategists (Sonera aka. Telecom Finland, Helsinki
Telephone Company, ICL, Nokia etc) share their days and nights. Even
though we young net people are quite different from them it's fun to hang
around there.
Yesterday night around two a clock I was still here at the university in
the biolab again when one of the #42 guys logged on and told that he was
here in Amsterdam, just closeby here in one hotel. Actually the hotel was
one of those we had visited with the UID group so there was a picture of
us standing in front of the door, I showed it to him then last night.

We agreed, on IRC, to meet the following day (today) at the Rai where they
are at the event I mentioned. So I went there and got in for free,
bypassing the queue of about 200 meters. Without hanging on IRC that late
night I wouldn't have even remembered the whole event and I didn't have
the money to get in anyway.
Now it was all beautifully set without any effort and I got to go there,
see all those wonderful new Internet technologies and meet people working
for some of the best companies and projects I know. And in the media and
politics discussions people are concerned about their kinds wasting their
lives chatting and often want to ban IRC as if it was somehow worse than
the dull e-mail or web, for example. Gee.
So my bags are full of information of new stuff and pockets filled with
business cards of people to initiate contact with. I showed the an-inet98
project page for many company people to both ask for practical advise
arranging the net collaboration session and for financial sponsorship.
The Sonera (tele.fi) people I was with were willing to offer their
MediaNet servers for audio/video streaming from Finland to Geneva and
back, their lab at <URL:http://www.ml.tele.fi/> does pretty neat job in
that area.
It seems to be quite easy to get Finnish companies support, although we
didn't agree on details yet, but it looks good now. They lack
international visibility and skills which are becoming evermore essential.
They do have brilliant technologies so at least in places like Holland
with "too much content but very little technology", as the people here put
it, we hopefully have something to offer.
The work to get some money for food for the following days is going ok,
I'm writing about the 1st International Browser Day that was on Friday and
the Cybertheatre evening this Monday. They say that CNN called Amsterdam
recently "The Cyber City" - I'm not suprised, here's so much going on. I
guess I could report some of today as well .. even though I'm getting
really bored of writing and hope to start some "real work" soon (wonder
what that should be? programming perhaps?).
I hope to have more time to work on the presentation soon. Perhaps I get
to go to visit Finland to meet the others and get things done there - some
people who have participated already could help a little more if we would
get together IRL (in real live, different from IRC) to get things started.
One idea has been to make a comic out of the story and illustrate the
presentation with comic-like strips.
The message below I sent from the exhibition using a nice small handheld
Psion5 with a Nokia cellphone for the Internet connection. Worked pretty
well - now that the spring is getting really warm and beautiful
(Flowerful!) here in Holland something like that would be a tempting
option for these computer labs.. :)
Timo, one of the recipients below, is my brother who's hopefully coming
for a holiday here soon from Oulu. Risto and Sanni are my parents.
Was nice to hear from you, thank you for advise and everything,
hopefully things are good also there on your side of the world!
~Toni
