&netppls2> "Finland telepresent in the Inet'98-conference - the Forest Net
People refuse to leave their country in summertime!"
A group of young netheads from the North of Finland, the country with the
most Internet users per capita in the world, is representing their country
by being telepresent in Internet Society Inet'98 in Geneva in July. They
announced today their unwillingness to travel to Central Europe as they
prefer to stay the summer safe in their home Forests.
Their presentation was accepted as a part of the final conference program
last weekend. The timing of the conference organizers, however, was quite
unfortunate -- these days the utterly dark and depressing Winter in
Northern Finland is making room for delightful brightness of the Sun
making the wide fields of snow shine like diamonds! These early Spring
days give the Finns a promise of a marvelous summer.
The group feels now a bit uneasy about travelling all the way to
Switzerland, which in their minds is a far-away, uncomfortably old
fashioned, traditional and presumably also an awfully crowded place during
the conference.
They are also unsure about the real benefits of the journey as it would
take an enormous amount of time away from their favourite activities, like
hanging on the net and especially walking in forests and swimming in
lakes, which is possible only for a short period of time each year in July
just when the conference takes place.
For these and other reasons the Finnish Net People have suggested that
they would stay home and interact with the people on the conference over
the Internet, preferably on IRC where they would be on anyway.
The group of youngsters is, however, interested in hearing more about what
the nature is like around Geneva and if the local telecommunications
infrastructure provides connectivity in the Alps.
