Subject: irc:stä inet99:iin?

oon tullut jo aika sokeaksi koko hommalle, kirjoitellut vaikka mitä ..

Asynchronous talk: using buffered IRC to keep with work and friends

Do the text-based chat systems have some benefits, or are they popular
just because the technology has not been ready for voice on the Internet?
Could they possibly be used effectively to combine the functionality of
free live discussions at the office, distant telephone calls and time
independent bulletins?

The paper shows how IRC (Internet Relay Chat) tools can be used in
everyday life to keep separate, but partly overlapping, groups of people
informed about on-going things - with little additional work and within
the global reach of the network. The systems in the case presented are far
from perfect, but have been in real use in both business and private life
for years, and provide ground for future software and service development
in the area.

A common problem in many groups and organizations is the lack of
information about the current situation. Often that information is passed
in oral discussions, on the phone perhaps, or in private e-mails - but so
that it still remains inaccessible for the other possibly interested
parties. In the case text-based chat systems offer a solution to this
problem.

In the study it is shown how the same forum may serve as a free, informal
virtual gathering place for live discussions and a time independent
information source. The case involves several separate channels: one used
as the virtual office of a company and others formed by a group of friends
or people interested in a certain topic. Some users - like the author -
participate in several of them simultaneously, while others may drop in
occasionally to only some of them. Many of the people also meet regularly
and use other telecommunication tools, like e-mail and telephones, with
each other.

The key is that the discussions can be logged and saved for later use
and/or buffered in the client software of each user, while he or she is
absent. This allows very flexible ways of use compared to the similar
discussions that usually take place face-to-face or using the telephone.
For example, people that happened to be elsewhere when a question was
asked or a debate took place can read and comment it later so that the
discussion may continue then or any time, from anywhere in the world.

On the other hand, e-mail and news type discussion forums provide the same
flexibility with much better structure and quality of content than chat
logs. At least in this case, however, the informality, ease of input and
intense spontaneous chat sessions bring more things on-line that otherwise
would ever be written. It also shows that experienced users can quickly
browse through the so called buffered discussions, scanning for
interesting facts and topics, while joining in. Also simple keyword
searches to archives are a powerful tool. With better software these
functionalities could perhaps be used by broader audiences in the future.

vielä tosiaan joitain tunteja pitää tuosta stressata, joten jos joku
sattuu jaksaan lukeen ja reagoimaan niin .. niin saa sanoa irkissä :)

kirjoitin aiemmin sellaisia tosi laveita: "communication on the internet"
tai öö no sellaisia maailmoja syleileviä kuitenkin, mutta tuossa koitin
tarttua yhteen jännään asiaan. tuntuu vaan ettei sitä oikein saanut
esille.
